MASAYASU MAEDA plays TERRY RILEY's SCULPTURE

Filmed by Vincent Moon

Sado Island is filled with surprises. Apart from Taiko drumming, processions and celebrations, the mystics and the poets, there is also the lesser-known presence of a very rare sculpture - one by Terry Riley himself, the legendary pope of minimalist music from the 60s, who now lives in Japan. A few years ago he got commissioned to design a sonic piece in this almost deserted harbour of Aikawa. We pass by there with Masayasu, a member of the Kodo taiko company as well as our wonderful host on the island. We exchange clothes more than ideas, he gets into a short improv as if calling the sky, suspended as a puppet master being played equally by its instrument, and the resonance of the grey afternoon surrounds us with delicacy. We hope you will enjoy this short homage to Terry-san and the sonic universe.

This music sequence is part of a series of films shot on Sado Island, thanks to Yoyo, Yasu, Marcus and many more.
