SUZUMENO TEARS + REMON NAKANISHI

filmed by Vincent Moon
made with the help of Yuji Moriwaki

It’s at (my-favorite-festival-in-the-world) Hashinoshita in August that I discovered Agatha, Miyuki and Remon. They were playing in a circus tent to a captivated audience, and it took me only a few minutes to have tears rolling down my cheeks. They perform “Minyo” songs, popular ancient songs of Japan, that they revisit in a different style than the nowadays already celebrated Minyo Crusaders. No cumbia or dancing rhythms here, just the simple harmony of three voices and a guitar, with some influences from Eastern European polyphonies, Bulgarian style mostly. It’s a music that opens the heart, one who doesn’t ask for meaning behind, as if the themes were obvious - love songs, despair songs, longing songs and so on. Listening to them reminds me of a never-ending fascination for stripped down music, back to the bone - voices, bodies, presence. It’s catchy and ancient, subtly modern though, as the greatest music are. We hope you will enjoy this little wander in the Yoyogi park of Tokyo on a sunny afternoon, and I hope audiences around the world can discover their music live soon. May the spirits be with them. Thanks to Yuji Moriwaki for the precious help on the recording, and to my brothers Hiromitsu Hirata and Negi for making me discover this extremely refined musical universe. Another side of Japan, again.
